This area was originally dominated by shifting sand dunes. The dunes were brought under control through the introduction of alien vegetation in 1827. In those days the alien vegetation held up the dunes and made it easier for Ox wagons to pass through the area.

The suburbs of the Cape Flats are relatively new. The area is generally poverty stricken and has a wide variety of community based organisations working in the area such as The Philani Nutrition centers and Khayeltisha Craft market.

The area has a high level of crime and the government seems to be unable to progress with effective development of the area.

Nevertheless there is a gritty spirit here and hospitality that is unrivaled. Township tourism has flourished in recent years.
