Stellenbosch

Stellenbosch, 65 kilometers from Cape Town city centre, is a cosmopolitan mix of history, nature, wine and student life.

The town became known as City of Oaks or Eikestad in Afrikaans due to the oak trees that were planted by its founder Simon van der Stel. These beautiful old trees provide valuable shade to the inhabitants of the town in the hot summer months. The town was founded on the banks of the Eerste river. The beautiful Jonkershoek Valley is the source of the Eerste river has a botanical garden that is open to the public.

Stellenbosch is a world renown wine growing region including 106 wine cellars most of which are open to the public. An ideal way to visit this region is to do a wine route. In addition to the wine you you will experience the history, architecture and way of life in this beautiful town.

Once you’ve had enough of the wine farms head into town and drive down the scenic Victoria Street. This will give you a feel for the energy of this University town. Stellenbosch is an important cultural center and has many galleries, museums and the oldest music school in the country the Stellenbosch Conservatoire.
